We live in a culture where the use of drugs and alcohol are considered normal and we even begin teaching our children at a very young age that consuming these substances is just a part of society. But people seem to disregard the fact that these substances are both highly addictive and harmful to one’s over all health. There are many side effects and negative consequences to becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol. But even in these cases it is possible. Drugs ruin lives, which means an intervention is necessary to save the person affected as well as to protect those around him or her.
Even when the addict is not willing to seek help, an intervention can be successful. Known as one of the most popular party drugs, ecstasy provides an initial ‘rush’ followed by feelings of calmness and well-being to those around, often combined with a heightened perception of colour and sound. It gives a feeling of energy and enables the user to dance for hours on end. This might sound euphoric, substantiating the name, but the downside of ecstasy is not so heavenly.
An overdose of ecstasy is characterised by high blood pressure, faintness, panic attacks, and, in more severe cases, loss of consciousness, seizures, and a drastic rise in body temperature. Such an overdose can be fatal, as it could result in heart failure or extreme heat stroke.

Cocaine is one of the most popular drugs available today. With its initial euphoric effects that include feelings of being energetic, talkative and mentally alert, it is often a drug that gets used repeatedly. It is highly addictive, however, and soon the user starts craving more and more frequent usage. In spite of the initial positive effects, cocaine is very hazardous to the health, and medical complications associated with cocaine use include cardiovascular effects, including disturbances in heart rhythm and heart attacks; such respiratory effects as chest pain and respiratory failure; neurological effects, including strokes, seizure, and headaches; and gastrointestinal complications, including abdominal pain and nausea.
